Balance and Fall Prevention

PATTERSON PHYSICAL THERAPY BALANCE TRAINING / FALL PREVENTION

Here at PPT we offer a complete approach to balance training. We are knowledgeable and able to evaluate multiple body symptoms including joint range of motion, strength, position awareness, agility, posture and gait. Physical Therapists are experts in prescribing active movement techniques and physical exercise to improve these systems. We will discuss activity goals with you, and design an exercise program to address your individual needs and goals. Your Physical Therapist will help you reach those goals in the safest, fastest, and most effective way possible.

We perform a thorough evaluation to identify deficits and then design a program for your specific needs. We consistently retest to be sure we are progressing and will frequently make adjustments based on your progress and needs.

REDUCE FALL RISK

  • Assesment of Footwear
  • Reduce home hazards such as loose rugs, poor lighting or other possible obstacles

REDUCE FEAR OF FALLING

  • Your initial evaluation will guide us to address the deficits and help give you the confidence to regain your ability to move and perform daily activities. Fear of moving and becoming more sedentary leads to further loss of ability to move.

IMPROVE MOBILITY

  • Tight muscles especially in the calf, legs and hips can lead to changes in your gait. For example if your calf muscles limit your ankle mobility you have less ability to adjust to uneven surfaces and your speed of walking will decrease.
  • We will determine if any of your major muscles are tight, and teach you how to gently stretch them
  • Good posture can improve your balance

IMPROVE BALANCE

  • We will teach you exercise for both static and dynamic balance. We will progressively increase the challenge as your skills improve

REDUCE FEAR OF FALLING

  • We will work the appropriate muscles to address weakness. Strengthening muscles in the trunk, hip, and stomach (ie, “core”) can be especially helpful in improving balance.
